Tag Questions
Tag questions are short questions added to the end of a sentence to check information or ask for agreement. Tag questions são perguntas curtas adicionadas ao final da frase para confirmar informação ou pedir concordância.
Overview
Structure: statement + comma + auxiliary + subject pronoun? Estrutura: frase + vírgula + auxiliar + pronome?
You are coming, aren’t you?
•She is your sister, isn’t she? Ela é sua irmã, não é?
Positive → Negative
If the statement is positive, the tag is negative. Se a frase é afirmativa, a tag é negativa.
You like coffee, don’t you?
•She can drive, can’t she? Ela pode dirigir, não pode?
•They have finished, haven’t they? Eles terminaram, não terminaram?
Negative → Positive
If the statement is negative, the tag is positive. Se a frase é negativa, a tag é positiva.
You don’t like tea, do you?
•She isn’t coming, is she? Ela não vem, vem?
•They didn’t call, did they? Eles não ligaram, ligaram?
Special Cases
Let’s → shall we? (Vamos..., não é?)
Imperatives: → will you? / won’t you? (Pedidos e ordens)
•Let’s go, shall we? Vamos, não é?
•Open the window, will you? Abra a janela, por favor.
