Prepositions

Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. Preposições mostram a relação entre um substantivo ou pronome e outra palavra na frase.

Overview

Prepositions often answer the questions: Where? When? How?

in, on, at, to, from, with, by, about

•The keys are on the table. As chaves estão sobre a mesa.

•We will meet at 5 p.m. Nós vamos nos encontrar às 5 horas.

Prepositions of Time

We use in / on / at for time expressions. Usamos in / on / at para expressões de tempo.

in → months, years, long periods (in June, in 2025)

on → days and dates (on Monday, on July 5th)

at → exact times (at 7 a.m., at night)

•My birthday is in May. Meu aniversário é em maio.

•We have class on Friday. Nós temos aula na sexta-feira.

•The movie starts at 8 p.m. O filme começa às 8 da noite.

Prepositions of Place

Common prepositions of place: in / on / at / under / next to / between

•The cat is under the table. O gato está debaixo da mesa.

•She is sitting next to me. Ela está sentada ao meu lado.

•The bank is between the school and the supermarket. O banco fica entre a escola e o supermercado.

Prepositions of Movement

Prepositions of movement show direction. Mostram direção.

to, into, out of, through, across

•She walked into the room. Ela entrou na sala.

•They ran across the street. Eles atravessaram a rua correndo.

Common Prepositional Phrases

Common phrases: in front of, at home, on time, by accident, in charge of

•Please be on time. Por favor, seja pontual.

•He broke the glass by accident. Ele quebrou o copo sem querer.

•She is in charge of the project. Ela está responsável pelo projeto.
