Phrasal Verbs
Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb + particle (preposition or adverb) that create a new meaning. Phrasal verbs são combinações de verbo + partícula (preposição ou advérbio) que criam um novo significado.
Overview
Phrasal verbs can be separable or inseparable. Eles podem ser separáveis ou inseparáveis.
Separable: turn off the light / turn the light off
Inseparable: look after the kids (not: look the kids after)
•Please turn off the TV. Por favor, desligue a TV.
•She looks after her brother. Ela cuida do irmão.
Daily Life
Common daily phrasal verbs: wake up, get up, sit down, turn on, turn off, put on, take off
wake up acordar
•I wake up at 7 a.m. Eu acordo às 7 da manhã.
turn on ligar
•Please turn on the lights. Por favor, ligue as luzes.
put on vestir / colocar
•She put on her jacket. Ela vestiu o casaco.
Work & Study
Common at work/school: hand in, look up, carry out, set up, go over
hand in entregar
•Please hand in your homework. Por favor, entregue sua lição.
look up procurar (informação)
•I will look up the word in the dictionary. Vou procurar a palavra no dicionário.
set up configurar / montar
•They set up a new office. Eles montaram um novo escritório.
Communication
Common in communication: find out, get back to, speak up, point out
find out descobrir
•I will find out the answer. Vou descobrir a resposta.
get back to retornar contato
•I will get back to you tomorrow. Eu retorno para você amanhã.
point out apontar / destacar
•She pointed out the mistake. Ela apontou o erro.
