Infinitive vs. -ing

Infinitive and -ing forms are used after certain verbs and expressions to show purpose, intention, or the activity itself. As formas no infinitivo e com -ing são usadas após certos verbos e expressões para mostrar propósito, intenção ou a atividade em si.

Overview

Some verbs are followed by the infinitive (to + verb), while others are followed by the -ing form. Alguns verbos são seguidos pelo infinitivo (to + verbo), enquanto outros são seguidos pela forma -ing.to study / studyingI want to study English. Eu quero estudar inglês.I enjoy studying English. Infinitive (to + verb)

We use the infinitive after many verbs, adjectives, and to show purpose. Usamos o infinitivo após muitos verbos, adjetivos e para mostrar propósito.want, decide, need, hope, plan, tryShe decided to leave. Ela decidiu sair.I went to the store to buy milk. Eu fui à loja para comprar leite.

-ing (Gerund)

We use the -ing form after certain verbs and as a noun. Usamos a forma -ing após certos verbos e como substantivo.enjoy, avoid, finish, keep, suggest, mindShe enjoys reading. Ela gosta de ler.Swimming is good for your health. Nadar é bom para sua saúde.

Verbs that Change Meaning

Some verbs change meaning depending on whether they are followed by the infinitive or the -ing form. Alguns verbos mudam de significado dependendo se são seguidos por infinitivo ou -ing.remember, stop, try, forgetI remembered to call her. Eu lembrei de ligar para ela (ação depois).I remember calling her. Eu lembro de ter ligado para ela (memória passada).He stopped to smoke.
